Art and design

Longstanding traditions within arts, crafts and design have developed in many regions into national and in some cases world famous brands. Fine art can be an important contribution to a region’s character. Some regions become magnets for artists of world repute with concomitant spin-offs through tourism as galleries are established, as is the case with the Tate Gallery in St Ives (Devon and Cornwall region of PURE) and the Turner Gallery in Margate (Kent region). As was indicated earlier, other regions have had numerous longstanding galleries, some located in universities themselves, providing educational functions for local populations and in themselves attracting visitors, as in Glasgow.

Universities can also assist in developing brands through supporting businesses in art and design, and in maximising a range of cultural spin-offs. Many universities have Fine Art and Design departments, and in many regions there exist specialist institutions. These can both provide specialist domain-specific advice and can contribute regionally through the service learning of their students.
